Solid Surface Fabrication for Commercial Interiors

DNS Industries fabricates solid surface, including Corian, for commercial interiors in Vaughan, Ontario. Reception and service counters, healthcare and lab casework tops, washroom vanities, cash wraps and curved feature pieces are cut, thermoformed, seamed and finished in-house, then built into the millwork they belong to.

What solid surface is

Solid surface is a cast material made of acrylic or polyester resin and mineral filler; Corian is acrylic-based. The colour and composition are the same through the full thickness, seams can be made inconspicuous, it can be heated and bent into curves, and it is non-porous. It is commonly specified where cleanability, few visible joints or curved forms matter.

Where it works best

  • Healthcare, veterinary and lab casework: tops with integral backsplashes and sinks and few joints to clean. See healthcare and veterinary millwork.
  • Reception desks and service counters: continuous transaction tops, curved fronts and wrapped edges. See office millwork and reception desks.
  • Retail cash wraps and counters that take daily wear.
  • Washroom vanities with integral bowls.
  • Curved features that are difficult or impractical in quartz or stone.

How we fabricate it

  • CNC cutting and routing for accurate profiles, cut-outs and edge details.
  • Thermoforming (heat bending) for curved fronts, radius corners and wrapped edges, within the minimum radius the material and thickness allow.
  • Seaming with colour-matched adhesive, which keeps seams inconspicuous on solid colours; veined and patterned colours show them more.
  • Edge build-ups for thicker-looking edges and drip details.
  • Shop assembly with the millwork: tops are fitted to the casework below them, and to any metal, glass or lit details, before delivery.

Solid surface or quartz?

Both are common on commercial counters:

  • Solid surface allows inconspicuous seams, integral sinks, curved shapes and in-place repair. It is softer than quartz, so it can scratch, but most scratches can be sanded out. It is a common choice for healthcare and for curved designs.
  • Quartz is harder and more scratch-resistant, with the look of stone, but joints are visible and it cannot be thermoformed. Neither material should take hot cookware without a trivet. Quartz suits straight counters where scratch resistance is the priority.

See materials and finishes for more on both.

What to specify

  • Seam locations, especially on long counters and around cut-outs.
  • Integral or drop-in sinks, and backsplash details.
  • Thermoforming radii for curves, and the edge profile and build-up thickness.
  • Colour and pattern, approved from a physical sample; heavily patterned colours show seams more than solids.
  • Support and substrate below the top, and any heat sources nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Is Corian the same as solid surface?

Corian is a well-known brand of solid surface. Several manufacturers make solid surface materials with similar properties; the specification should name the brand and colour.

Can solid surface be repaired?

Yes. Because the colour runs through the material, scratches and many chips can be sanded or repaired in place.

Can solid surface be curved?

Yes. It can be thermoformed into curves and radius corners, which is one of its main advantages over stone.

Is solid surface good for healthcare?

It is widely used in healthcare because it is non-porous and can be built with inconspicuous seams and integral sinks, leaving fewer joints to clean. It is not antimicrobial in itself, so hygiene still depends on the facility’s cleaning protocol.
