A drawing can be approved and still be wrong. Not because anyone erred, but because a finish reads differently at scale, a reveal looks heavier in person, or a veneer match that worked on a sample loses its rhythm across a wall. Mock-ups and first-article approvals exist to find that out on one unit rather than fifty.
On a single flagship you may want a mock-up. On a rollout you want both: a mock-up to settle the design, then a first article to lock production.
On a multi-location program the risk isn’t one bad unit — it’s the same error, repeated everywhere, discovered after the run. A first article converts that into a single correctable unit. It’s the same logic as building a pilot store before scaling: prove it once, lock the specification and cost, then repeat with confidence.
The cost of a first article is almost always less than the cost of reworking a production run.
A mock-up is not free time. Building it, reviewing it, revising it and re-reviewing it can add two to four weeks before production begins — on top of submittal review. Specified early, that’s planned. Requested late, it’s delay. If a mock-up is genuinely required, it belongs in the tender documents and the baseline schedule (see lead times).
Straightforward casework in standard finishes rarely justifies one — the samples and shop drawings carry enough information. Reserve mock-ups for where appearance carries real risk: feature millwork, sequence-matched veneer, unusual finishes, or anything about to be repeated across many locations. Blanket-specifying mock-ups on every element is a schedule and budget cost with little return — the same over-specification trap as quality grades.
DNS builds mock-ups and first articles in-house, so the unit you approve is made on the same equipment, by the same people, in the same finishing system as the production run. That’s the point — a mock-up built somewhere else proves very little.
A physical sample built to the actual specification — a full unit, partial assembly, or finish panel — produced before production so the design team can approve appearance, construction and finish against the real thing rather than a drawing.
The first production unit, built exactly as the remainder will be built, inspected and approved before the rest of the run proceeds — so any issue is caught on one unit instead of fifty.
